What is Spinal Flow Technique?

Spinal Health and the Nervous System

Spinal Flow Technique is rooted in the idea that the spine plays a central role in maintaining the function of the nervous system, which controls and coordinates every single function in the body. Misalignments, tensions, or blockages in the spine (often referred to as "subluxations" or in Spinal Flow Technique, blockages) can lead to dysfunction or interference in the nervous system, which in turn can manifest as physical or emotional health problems.

Within the autonomic nervous system, we have our sympathetic nervous system which protects us during times of threat. Whether it is a physical, emotional or chemical threat; if the body experiences something it doesn't like it goes into protection mode or what’s commonly referred to as fight, flight, freeze. Curling in to protect the heart, ramping up adrenals and hormones. To balance that out, we have our parasympathetic nervous system referred to as rest/digest/heal mode. It is designed to bring our levels back down to their natural state after the threat has passed bringing calm and ease back into the body. This is part of the body’s natural healing cycle.

In today's society however, we're inundated with stress on a daily basis which makes it hard for that natural balance to take place. When stress isn't properly processed it remains stored in the nervous system which is housed within the spine. This is even more prevalent with emotional stress or traumatic life events. Every time we replay a stressful event in our mind,  the body can't differentiate that the threat is in the past.

This reactivates the fight/ flight response and all the ramped up levels of the sympathetic nervous system and keeps the body stuck in fight/ flight. Emotional stress plays a huge part in our physical health. Whatever the stress or threat, regardless of how many years ago it happened, remains stuck in the nervous system if the proper cycle of healing wasn’t allowed to complete itself at the time.

The Flow of Energy

Spinal Flow is based on the concept that the body has a natural energy flow, sometimes referred to as "life force energy" or "innate intelligence”.  If the nervous system is the main electrical panel of our body, cerebral spinal fluid or CSF is the energy. This energy is thought to move freely through the spine and nervous system when the body is in alignment. Disruptions in this flow—caused by physical trauma, years of stress, chemical or emotional blockages—can lead to a kink in the line, that is not allowing the full flow of CSF (energy) to properly run our body’s main circuit, our nervous system. The Spinal Flow Technique aims to restore the natural flow of energy or cerebral spinal fluid, by removing the layers of stress and blockages by promoting increased flow in conjunction with sending  signals to the brain; thereby promoting self-healing and improved health.

Gentle Touch Creates Ripples

This technique employs a light, non-invasive touch along the spine to detect and address areas where the flow of energy is blocked or restricted. This touch is subtle, with the practitioner often using their hands to sense changes in the body’s energy and make very gentle contact to activate the body’s own self-healing mechanisms and encourage the restoration of energy flow of the CSF . This is done with a one finger contact on key access points on the sacrum which is the primary point or the temple which is the secondary point. The contact of these access points causes a regeneration or ripple effect of the body’s flow and natural healing system.

Awareness and Mind-Body/Somatic Connection

One of the key principles of Spinal Flow Technique is the idea of increasing the individual’s awareness of their body and mind. This technique aims to help clients tune into their internal sensations and recognize areas of tension or discomfort, which can help them achieve a greater mind-body or somatic connection . It encourages the parasympathetic response which results in relaxation, mindfulness, emotional release, and profound healing during treatment.

"Your body already knows how to heal. By contacting the access points, we tap into the life force within, allowing the bodyto restore itself naturally. This is the magic of Spinal Flow" Dr. Carli Axford, founder of Spinal Flow Technique

At this point in my life I can say that the common denominator is in my 5 decades on this earth is that I am a Healer. I adored my 27 years as a NICU Nurse, then opened Beacon Yoga in Freehold in 2017 ( closed during the pandemic) working with Young Living Essential Oils, Herbal Teas with Grateful Alchemy, and now HERE we are!!

This modality has me swooning! Every experience in my life has guided me to this Spinal Flow Technique, and I feel truly blessed and grateful to share it with you!

I Believe

As an RN and holistic health practitioner, I believe in the power of our bodies to heal themselves. When you cut yourself, you don't need to tell your body to close up the wound and heal, it just heals. This is the exact mechanism Spinal Flow Technique accesses. Your body WANTS to heal and harmonize. You just have to give your body permission and open the channels of energy.

    After Spinal Flow Instructions

    Hydration is Extremely Important

Spinal Flow Technique can stimulate the release of toxins as the body’s systems realign. The cerebral spinal fluid that is regenerated is mostly water thus supports the detoxification process. Our body generates around 2.5 cups of CSF a day, so that water is drawn from your body stores.

    • Drink plenty of water after your session ( at minimum 1-2 liters within 24 hours.
    • Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks which will dehydrate you
    • Herbal Teas, especially those with anti-inflammatory properties

( Chamomile, Ginger, Lemon Balm, Hibiscus, Turmeric)

    • Not drinking enough water while receiving treatment can result in dehydration.

Listen to your body, Rest and Relaxation

Allow your body to integrate the shifts that occur during therapy. Be attentive to how your body feels in the hours and days following your session.  This is when patience and honoring your body is most important. Sometimes this is when your symptoms may get a little worse before it gets better. Follow guidelines and know you are supported. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Spinal Flow can stay active for several days. Avoid strenuous activities immediately following your session

    • Prioritize restful sleep, consider a short nap if you feel fatigued
    • Engage in relaxation practices such as meditation, gentle yoga, warm bath.
    • Some individuals may experience an emotional release or physical release, you may have feelings come up to the surface and begin to cry-not knowing why. This is all a part of the healing process.

    Follow up Treatment

Consistency is key to long term benefits

    • Attend follow up sessions - this is imperative for the body to integrate and get over the “uncomfortableness” of healing.
    • If you feel like “ I’m not in the mood” or “I have a headache”  That is when you absolutely NEED to come in to help move that energy through as soon as possible.

    Nutrition

Support your body’s healing process by nourishing it with whole, nutrient dense foods that are organic/non GMO  like fresh  fruits and vegetables.

    • Focus on anti-inflammatory foods such as leafy greens, berries, nuts, omega 3 rich sources.
    • Minimize processed foods, alcohol and excessive sugar or caffeine.

    Grounding Practices and Mindful Movement

Reconnection to the earth and its rhythms can help stabilize and promote balance.

    • Walking in nature, barefoot in the grass or on the beach, (weather permitting) is so beneficial!
    • Sun exposure especially in the morning has many benefits
    • Meditation practices, ( I love the insight timer app) Breath work, yoga, gentle stretching, Essential oils - particularly tree oils - diffused in the home ( or on the feet)  are very grounding as well. ( Young Living is my preferred EO brand- I have tons of experience so please chat with me about which oils to choose)
